Pregnancy is one of those times where you’re constantly being told two completely different things.
“Just enjoy it, don’t worry about your weight”
But also…
“Make sure you don’t gain too much”
And somewhere in the middle of all that, you’re left feeling like your body is completely out of your control.
If you’ve been feeling puffy, inflamed, gaining weight quickly, or just not like yourself… I want you to know this is more common than you think.
But it’s also not something you just have to accept and suffer through.
This isn’t about losing weight during pregnancy.
This is about understanding your body, supporting it properly, and managing unnecessary weight gain in a healthy, safe way.

What’s Actually Normal During Pregnancy
First things first, weight gain during pregnancy is expected.
Your body is:
growing a baby
increasing blood volume
holding more fluid
storing energy for later
So yes, the scale will go up.
But what most people don’t talk about is how quickly that number can jump, especially in the first and second trimester, and how much of that can be:
fluid retention
inflammation
blood sugar fluctuations
Not just body fat.
That’s why the scale alone can be really misleading.
Why Some Women Gain More Weight Than Expected
This is where things get interesting, and where most advice completely misses the mark.
It’s not just about “eating too much”.
1. Blood Sugar Spikes
If your meals are higher in refined carbs and lower in protein, your blood sugar will spike and crash.
This leads to:
stronger cravings
more frequent hunger
increased fat storage
And it can feel like you’re constantly chasing energy.
2. Increased Stress and Cortisol
Pregnancy is a stress on the body, even when everything is going well.
Higher cortisol can lead to:
water retention
puffiness (especially face, hands, legs)
the scale going up quickly without true fat gain
3. Not Enough Protein
This is a big one I see all the time.
Low protein intake can lead to:
increased hunger
poor muscle maintenance
more fat gain over time
4. Inflammation and Digestion Issues
Bloating, constipation, and gut issues are very common in pregnancy.
This can cause:
a distended stomach
discomfort
extra scale weight that isn’t fat
5. Doing Too Much… or Nothing at All
Some women stop moving completely.
Others push too hard and burn out.
Both can work against you.
What You Can Control (Without Dieting)
This is the part that actually matters.
You don’t need to diet.
You don’t need to restrict.
But you do need some structure.
Build Your Meals Around Protein
Every meal should include a solid protein source.
This helps:
stabilise blood sugar
reduce cravings
support your body as it changes
Focus on Blood Sugar Balance
Instead of cutting carbs, balance them.
Pair carbs with:
protein
healthy fats
This keeps energy stable and helps prevent excessive fat gain.
Keep Moving (in a Realistic Way)
You don’t need to smash yourself in the gym.
But daily movement is powerful:
walking
light strength training
staying generally active
Manage Inflammation
Simple things go a long way:
drink enough water
keep electrolytes balanced
prioritise whole foods
reduce highly processed foods where possible
What to Avoid
This is just as important.
Avoid:
under-eating or trying to “diet”
cutting out entire food groups
overdoing cardio
obsessing over the scale daily
And most importantly…
stop comparing your pregnancy to someone else’s.
A Final Note
Your body is doing something incredible.
But that doesn’t mean you have to feel constantly uncomfortable, inflamed, or out of control.
With the right approach, you can:
feel strong
support your baby
manage weight gain in a healthy way
and actually feel good in your body while pregnant
